Recently, entomologists of the Viet Nam Museum of Nature and Japanese and Chinese entomologists have described a new butterfly species for science.
The new species has the scientific name Ypthima dao Monastyrskii & Lang, 2022, named after the wife of Dr. Monastyrskii Alexander, the first author of the paper.
The new species belongs to the butterfly family Nymphalidae, found in northern and central Viet Nam and southwestern China.
Specifically, samples were collected in Dong Van district, Ha Giang; Tam Dao National Park, Vinh Phuc Province; Bach Ma National Park, Thua Thien Hue Province; Dak Tram commune, Dak To district, Kon Tum province. Specimens were also obtained in China, near the Vietnamese border.
Scientists from Viet Nam Museum of Nature and Bac Giang University of Agriculture and Forestry; Ha Long University, Hanoi National University and Guangxi Botanical Institute, China also recently discovered and described a new elephant-eared species.
The new species is named Oreocharis phuongii, with inflorescence stalks up to 22cm long, bracts 2, yellow flowers with tubular corolla, stamens 4, capsule up to 6cm long.
The new elephant-eared species is distinguished from its relatives by a number of morphological features of the leaves (shape, base, tips, and margins), the size of the calyx, the coat of the corolla, and the inner surface of the three lower lobes of the colon.
The new species was discovered in the limestone mountains of Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue provinces. The research results were published in the specialized journal PhytoKeys 193: 45-53.
In addition, scientists from the Viet Nam Museum of Nature and colleagues recently discovered a new species of fern, recorded in Son Kim commune, Huong Son district of Ha Tinh province.
The discovery of many new species of flora and fauna has contributed to confirming the biodiversity in Viet Nam
