According to the Minister of Science and Technology, science, technology and innovation activities for sustainable development of the Mekong Delta and adaptation to climate change in the coming time need to implement 6 basic orientations.

     In particular, focus on forming large interdisciplinary and inter-regional S&T projects and tasks to research and solve major, urgent and systemic problems of the region.

     Building and installing automatic measurement and monitoring systems of environmental, soil, climate, hydrological parameters... to promptly inform, proactively serve forecasting and deploying measures appropriate response in each period, especially in response to the impact of extreme weather.

     To attach importance to researching and proposing S&T solutions to ensure long-term water sources, proactively supplying fresh water to water-scarce areas along the Mekong Delta (such as building freshwater reservoirs from river and canal systems and exploiting underground water in areas with underground water sources of quality and reserve of different sizes; saltwater desalination systems using renewable energy, etc.).

     Promote practical application of successful results of S&T tasks on solutions to prevent coastal and riverbank erosion under the Science and Technology Program for sustainable development in the Southwest region. The program needs to continue to research S&T solutions in a holistic manner. In particular, attention is paid to ensuring the safety of irrigation infrastructure in the Mekong Delta in the event of prolonged drought and salinity.
